Lewis A. Shepard

Lewis Shepard's first visit to a museum was to the Washington D.C. National Gallery in 1954. Later, finishing his formal art history studies (Rutgers and Indiana) Lewis worked at Sotheby's, New York in the Department of American Art. He then moved to Massachusetts and served at Curator of Collections at the Mead Art Museum, Amherst College where he organized exhibitions, wrote catalogues and purchased works of art. From I977 to 2021 he established his own business as an art appraiser and consultant, a career that took him to art museums in New England, the mid-West and California.

Over the years he has taught at Indiana University, Amherst College, Smith College, Worcester State University, Bentley University and the Continuing Education Department at RISD.  He and his wife Ellen Berezin, who was also a museum curator, have had a home in Wellfleet since 2009.
