(ZOOM) Social Housing: Obstacles and Opportunities

$60.00

February Thursdays plus March 5th  10am-12pm (ZOOM)

The objective of this course is to examine social housing: its history in the US, and the political factors and mechanisms for funding that influence its creation and growth. Examples will include post-WW2 housing, selected east coast and west coast projects, and lessons from abroad. We will include the Lawrence Road housing in Wellfleet and the process of determining reuse of the Maurice Campgrounds site; guests involved with the local process will join us. With a focus on the architecture, course initiated and taught by an architect, discussions will examine civic-minded concerns. One question for discussion is how the architecture can contribute to acceptance, approval, and success of a project. The course will also look at the difference, if any, between “social housing” and “affordable housing,” and attempt to dispel the misnomer of “low-cost housing.” This course will be instructed by Martha Rothman .
