Reading and Writing Edith Wharton

$60.00
sold out

John Anderson and Lynn C. Miller

April 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22

Thursdays, 2-4PM on Zoom

This course examines texts by and about Edith Wharton, with a central focus on her bestselling 1905 novel The House of Mirth. Both instructors have written texts in which Wharton appears as a character, and these also will be assigned reading for the class. Lynn C. Miller’s novel, The Angel of Devastation, a work-in-progress, portrays Wharton writing The House of Mirth, placing the novel in a biographical context, juxtaposed with the story of a contemporary playwright adapting The House of Mirth for the stage. John Dennis Anderson’s play, A Cultivated Friendship, co-authored by Karen Vuranch, portrays Wharton at the end of her life and focuses on her close friendship with the much-younger writer Louis Bromfield.

The class will be assigned to read selected chapters from The Angel of Devastation before the first class meeting. The second and third classes will be devoted to The House of Mirth. The fourth class will cover short stories by Wharton that will include “Roman Fever” and “All Souls,’” and the last class will discuss A Cultivated Friendship.
