April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15

Thursdays, 1:30 - 3:30

Wellfleet Preservation Hall

Movies play a key role in spreading awareness among women, uncovering their potential, challenging the male-dominated world and making further social change. Historically, the film industry has portrayed women as wives, lovers, and mothers, or as glorified objects of beauty, symbolizing sex appeal and entertainment. However due to the feminist movement, gender stereotypes are finally being challenged, and more complex female characters are represented on screen.

Female directors offer the audience an unbiased and realistic image of women that aligns with their actual status in society. Additionally, films directed by women are more often written by women and have more leading female characters than in films directed by male filmmakers.

This course will address the greater recognition women directors are beginning to receive and honor 20 remarkable women who blazed the trail.

The course will be taught in 20 classes spread out over 4 sessions. This spring we will be discussing the following 5 filmmakers and their films:

1.        BARBARA STREISAND (“Yentl” 1984)

2.        AVA DUVERNAY (“Origin” 2023)

3.        JUSTINE TRIET (“Anatomy of a Fall” 2023)

4.        LINA WERTMULLER (“Swept Away” 1975)

5.        NORA EPHRON (“Julie and Julia” 2009)
