Martha L. Rothman

Picture
Martha Leibowitz Rothman, FAIA, graduated from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in
1965 with a Master of Arts in Architecture. She joined Rothman Partners in 1971, founded in
1968 by her husband Elliot Paul Rothman. Martha was President of Rothman Partners
Architects until 2005 when the firm merged with Anshen + Allen of San Francisco, with Martha
becoming a principal at Anshen + Allen + Rothman, then Anshen + Allen until 2010. Martha
joined Shepley Bulfinch as a consulting principal from 2011 until 2016.

Notable projects of the Rothman firm in New England are The Carl J. Shapiro Clinical Center at
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the Research and Education Building at the Harvard
School of Dental Medicine, a master plan for the Harvard Longwood Campus, a maternal and
NICU wing at Women and Infants’ Hospital in Providence and the College of Engineering at the
University of New Hampshire. At Shepley Bulfinch she had the opportunity to develop the
master plan for a new University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda for Partners In Health.

After living for over 50 years in Boston’s South End, Martha and Elliot moved to Brooklyn in 2012. Seasonal residents of Wellfleet since 1976, they designed their own home, inspired by the Cape Cod mid-century modern houses. The couple had a joint exhibit of their paintings- “Near and Far”- at Wellfleet Preservation Hall in the summer of 2021.
