Lewis A. Shepard

Lewis Shepard's longtime interest in photography began as a teenager when he set up his first darkroom. He later worked behind the counter at Midtown Camera in Newark, New Jersey. After finishing his formal art history studies (Rutgers and Indiana) Lewis worked at Sotheby's, New York in the department of American Art. He then moved to Massachusetts and served at Curator of Collections at the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College where he organized exhibitions, wrote catalogues and purchased works of art. In 1977 he established his own business as an art appraiser and consultant, a job that has taken him to most museums in New England.
Over the years he taught at Indiana University, Amherst College, Smith College, Worcester State University, Bentley University and the Continuing Education Department at RISD. He and his wife Ellen Berezin, who was also a museum curator, have had a home in Wellfleet since 2009.
